Historically, Playa Negra was a sleepy little town. It mostly saw tourism during the times when the beach here had surfing waves. Incidentally, it is one of Costa Rica’s top surfing destinations. However, since million-dollar beachfront homes were built here a new type of tourist is coming to the area. As a consequence, the town has filled with all the necessary services that one expects. There are tourism shops, rental shops, a plethora of great restaurants including Villa DeeVina which was heralded by the New York Times. What makes Playa Negra so perfect is that it is just close enough to everything and just far enough away at the same time.
